Climate Change Adaptation Awareness Camps among the school Children & Building resilient

GPSVS has been creating awareness and sensitizing both government and private school children through interactive sessions, practical demonstrations, and hands-on activities. The initiative began with orientation programs where students and teachers were introduced to climate change concepts, disaster risks, and the role of biodiversity in sustaining ecosystems.

One of the core activities has been school-based tree plantation drives, where children actively participated in planting saplings on school campuses and surrounding areas. Beyond mere plantation, GPSVS emphasized nurturing responsibilities. Each student adopted a plant, becoming a “Tree Guardian” responsible for its care and survival. Students have been trained to maintain Tree Diaries, where they systematically record observations including plant height, number of leaves, color variations, seasonal changes, and signs of pest or disease attacks. These diaries are not only scientific documentation but also tools for cultivating curiosity and responsibility among children.

Awareness sessions also included discussions on climate change impacts, disaster preparedness, health risks, and sustainable practices like waste segregation, water conservation, and use of eco-friendly alternatives. Teachers played a facilitative role by integrating these lessons into classroom discussions and extracurricular activities, ensuring long-term learning.

Major Highlighted Focused Activities

1. Climate Awareness Sessions:

  • Conducted interactive sessions in schools to explain the impact of climate change, the importance of biodiversity, and sustainable living practices.
  • Used storytelling, street plays, and eco-games to engage children.

2. Tree Plantation Drives:

  • Various type of saplings planted across school campuses and communities in the targeted districts.
  • Each student adopted a sapling and became a “Tree Guardian.”
  • Students monitored their plants through Tree Diaries (recording growth, seasonal changes, and health).
  • Developed watering schedules and care rotations to ensure plant survival.

3. Skill-Building for Climate Action:

  • Training sessions for students and teachers on eco-friendly practices like waste management, water conservation, and use of renewable resources.

4. Integration with SDGs:

  • SDG 13: Climate Action – Enhancing resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – Promoting experiential and inclusive environmental education.
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Building awareness on the linkages between environment, health risks, and disaster management.
